Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction rewrites the record books

A triumphant 32nd Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction saw all records tumble at Spier in the Stellenbosch Winelands over the weekend, with total sales exceeding R13,8 million and new record wine prices for red, white, Méthode Cap Classique and Port.

With sales of R13 833 400, almost R2 million more than the previous record, the auction showed its prowess once again as a showcase of top South African wines.

For the second consecutive year, Kanonkop CWG Paul Sauer 2013 fetched the highest price ever paid for a red wine at the auction with a top bid of R13 400 for a case of six. White wine prices also soared with Jordan Chardonnay Auction Selection 2015 setting a new auction record of R9 400. Silverthorn Wines Big Dog II Méthode Cap Classique 2011 fetched the highest price ever for an MCC at R7 000, while Boplaas Cape Vintage Auction Reserve 2009 achieved a record high of R7 000 a case.

Other top selling red wines included Rust en Vrede CWG Auction Estate 2013 at R12 600, Boekenhoutskloof Syrah Auction Reserve 2014 at R11 400 and Beyerskloof Traildust Pinotage 2014 at R11 000. Top achieving white wines included Ataraxia Under the Gavel Chardonnay 2015 at R7 800, Kaapzicht Estate Auction Selection 1947 Chenin Blanc 2015 at R6 400, Paul Cluver The Wagon Trail Chardonnay 2015 at R5 800 and Beaumont Family Wines “Moerse Moer” Chenin Blanc 2015 at R5 400.

Tsogo Sun was the biggest buyer for the third year in a row with total purchases of over R2,6 million. Other top buyers included The Butcher Shop & Grill, Singita, Crown Wine Cellars in Hong Kong, Restaurant Mosaic, Kobo Safaris and Signature Restaurant.

“The record auction gives recognition to the quality of our top tier wines crafted in small volumes and shows that South African wines are deserving of the same high prices achieved by wines of comparative quality around the world. Our auction wines represent all the top growing wine regions in South Africa and show great diversity of style,” says Miles Mossop, Chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

He expressed his appreciation for the generosity shown by auction buyers in supporting the transformation of the South African wine industry: “We have been able to plough back into the industry by raising over R1,95 million at various events this year for the development of talented young winemakers and viticulturists through the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust and our Protégé Programme.”
Over and above the main auction, a record amount of R374 800 was raised on the day in aid of the Protégé Programme. This year’s special item sold at the Charity Auction, the one-of-a-kind CWG Auction Magnum Collection of the 2016 auction wines in 1,5 litre magnum bottles, was purchased for R150 000.

The auction, conducted by Henré Hablutzel of Hofmeyr Mills Auctioneers for the 19th consecutive year, attracted a total of 152 buyers comprising 125 local and 27 foreign buyers. In total 2 428 cases (6 x 750ml equivalent) were sold at an average price of R5 697 per case and an average price per bottle of R950.

The lineup of 52 wines included 34 red wines, 15 white wines, 3 Méthode Cap Classique, a Port and a potstill brandy.

The bulk of the wines, 84%, was snatched up by local buyers with 16% bought by foreigners on par with last year. The foreign buyers comprised the most countries ever represented at the auction including the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Denmark, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, France, Dubai, Brazil and the USA.
