Nedbank, longstanding partner of the Cape Winemakers Guild for over two decades, has stepped up its investment in the Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme for 2017.

The Nedbank Eyethu Community Trust has pledged R700 000 to boost the Guild’s Protégé Programme which currently supports nine talented young winemakers and a viticulturist completing their internships under the mentorship of some of the country’s finest winemakers.

“One of our proudest achievements after the formation of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust 18 years ago, is undoubtedly our Oenology and Viticultural
Protégé Programme. The Guild in partnership with Nedbank, is playing a significant role in the transformation of the wine industry. We are deeply indebted to Nedbank as the sponsor of our annual auction and donations to the Development Trust by the Nedbank Foundation,” says Miles Mossop, chairman of the Cape Winemakers Guild.

The Cape Winemakers Guild Protégé Programme, a first in the wine industry, was launched in 2006 under the patronage of the Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Development Trust with the goal of sustaining the health of the industry by cultivating, nurturing and empowering promising individuals to become winemakers and viticulturists of excellence.

“At Nedbank, applying our financial expertise to do good takes on many different shapes and forms. Skills development programmes like this deliver far more than just training, they also encourage the students to truly believe in themselves and their abilities, and give them the confidence to build lives for themselves, as they are our country’s future industry leaders,” explains Lindiwe Temba, Executive Head for Corporate Social Investment at Nedbank.

In addition to the generous donation from the Nedbank Eyethu Community Trust, the members of the Guild also raise funds through various silent and charity auctions at events throughout the year. These events include the upcoming Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Showcase being held in Cape Town on Thursday, 17 August and in Johannesburg on Wednesday, 23 August 2017. The Showcase offers wine lovers an interactive platform to taste the rare auction wines and engage with the Guild’s winemakers. Tickets to the Showcase can be purchased via www.webtickets.co.za.

The Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Auction will take place on Saturday, 30 September 2017 from 09h00 at Spier Conference Centre in the Stellenbosch Winelands. The auction is open to the public. Telephonic and proxy bidding options are also available to those unable to attend in person. Registration for the Auction and VIP Lounge will close on Wednesday, 20 September.
