De Krans wins big with Rosé

The De Krans Pinotage Rosé 2017 was recently awarded a gold medal at the Rosé Rocks! competition.

Rosé Rocks!’ is South Africa’s first wine competition which is entirely dedicated to Rosé and seeks to not only acknowledge excellence in rosé winemaking but also to in effect, promote the category in SA. Apart from Chenin (one of the fastest growing grape varieties in the country), Rosé is arguably, the ultimate comeback kid, only a much cooler version. Rosé’s are becoming lighter in colour and the styles are evolving to produce a wine with a greater balance between fruit and acidity -a far cry from the dark red bottles of sweetness and bad memories. Rosé is no longer the elephant in the room, the embarrassing family member, or the looming headache. The style has become sophisticated and classy and subsequently developed into an overall competitive category. Even men drink Rosé now, with the brilliance of the evolution in its style, making the pink colour vastly irrelevant.

Consumers are becoming more attracted to the lighter colour with the change in colour signaling a dryer style wine. The De Krans Pinotage Rosé pleasantly surprises with its depth of layers. The wine is delicate yet punching in its flavours – a combination of candy floss, strawberries and other red fruit. The wine is smooth with a lingering aftertaste, perfect as a food wine or a lazy Sunday accompaniment while soaking up the sun. In true chameleon fashion, the team at De Krans originally made a Tinta Barocca Rosé, followed by a Cabernet Rosé. Ultimately, they’ve found that the Pinotage style Rosé not only resonates with the consumer in terms of taste, but also its tribute to our proudly South African grape variety.

Through the decades the farm De Krans has been synonymous with quality port style wines. Given the climate and the terroir, Portuguese grape varieties flourished and resulted in multiple awards and platter stars.
