Not one, but two wines from the Hartenberg Wine Estate range scored more than 90 points in the seventh annual Prescient Chardonnay Report, which was published on 18 October.

The Eleanor Chardonnay 2015 scored an impressive 93 points, and the Hartenberg Chardonnay 2015 91 points out of a possible 100. A total of 91 entries from 63 producers were received, which were tasted blind by a panel of three judges.

The Eleanor Chardonnay, which forms part of Hartenberg’s range of Super Premium wines, pays tribute to the matriarch of the Finalyson family who, with her husband Maurice, owned the farm (then known as Montagne) from 1948 to 1977. A strong and resolute woman, yet always sophisticated and poised, the Chardonnay is her perfect partner in wine. Cellar master Carl Schultz says the that the 2015 vintage displays an abundance of perfumed, nutty and vanillin note flavours, with complex yet rich tangy finish. The result is an elegant wine with a persistent finish. The perfect wine to enjoy with rich foods such as Oysters, Scallop and Chardonnay Risotto with a Basil Cream Sauce, Cape Line fish and cheeses. A wine collector’s dream the Eleanor Chardonnay 2015 is available directly from the cellar or specialist wine stores at R325 per bottle.

2017 has proven to be a stellar year for the Chardonnay 2015. Last month the wine received a score of 92 (out of a possible 100) from leading Master of Wine, Tim Atkin, in his annual South Africa Special Report. Carl describes this wine, which was matured in French Oak barrels for 12 months, as displaying aromas of fresh lemon and lime, which is followed by a creamy nuttiness. The wine has a complex structure with a vibrant crisp palate, which leads into an elegant oak finish. This wine is the perfect food partner to cream based dishes, smoked duck or chicken, and enhances the flavours beautifully of a seared tuna served with olive oil, lime juice and black pepper. Available directly from the cellar or select wine stores at R115 per bottle.
