The wines have been tasted and the winners announced at this year’s International Wine Challenge (IWC) 2018, which saw Paul Cluver Wines receive Gold for its Noble Late Harvest 2017. A botrytis Riesling – the first to be released in three years – the wine scored an impressive 96 points.

According to Cellar Master, Andries Burger, this particular Noble Late Harvest delivers on a superb concentration of flavours, guaranteed to take your senses on a journey of pure wine delight. The aromas on the nose carry through to the palate with fresh pineapple, marmalade, kumquat and honey characters. The mouth feel is beautifully balanced and is full of a fresh acidity, with a long and lingering aftertaste, it’s the perfect partner to cheeses, desserts or simply enjoy, chilled on its own. Earlier this month the same wine received a Double Gold at The National Wine Challenge / Top 100 SA Wines competition as well as 96 points from well-known sommelier Miguel Chan of Tsogo Sun, which is testimony to Andries’ philosophy in only producing a wine of outstanding quality.

‘To be acknowledged in both the local and international platforms for this wine means the world to us. With pressure to release a new vintage year on year, I’m so glad that I am able to stay true to my belief in only releasing a Noble Late Harvest of the exceptional quality it has become known for,’ says Andries.

The IWC is regarded as one of the world’s finest and most meticulously judged wine competitions, which follows a rigorous judging process. Every wine is blind tasted and judged based on its faithfulness to style, region and vintage. Each medal-winning wine is tasted on three separate occasions by at least 10 judges.

‘Another fantastic year for South Africa at the International Wine Challenge where we saw lots of class across a range of styles. South Africa already has a fantastic reputation for its output of quality wines of great value. Increasingly we’re also seeing new and established winemakers excel with great classic varieties as well as with more unusual grapes,’ comments leading industry influencer and IWC’s co-chair, Oz Clark.
